Dropped wireless connections

I purchased a D-Link DI-614+ wireless router and I'm returning this unit
because of frequent, and regular connection drops.

I use my notebook PC about 15ft (and 2 walls) away from the router, but the
signal strength reading is always between 95 -100%. Every 15 minutes or so,
the signal drops to zero for a few seconds and returns to normal. This
wouldn't be bad except for a VPN link I use to the office. The drop is long
enough to kill the VPN link.

I've talked to tech support and tried changing channels and nearly all other
user enabled config setting but nothing helps. Unfortunately, I'm reading
reviews for other brands of WiFi routers and seeing the same problem. I was
considering a Netgear MR814 until reading a user review on Amazon.com
describing nearly the identical problem.

Is this something all WiFi users have to deal with? Are some brands more
prone to this than others?

Thanks,
Dave

Do you have 2.4G phone nearby? What about a microwave oven?

I use a bottom of the line Linksys and I've not had any problems with
dropping. I did have problems with dropping during a trial of Linksys'
"G" router, but returned it for a BEFW11S4

No. I don't have a 2.4ghz phone. I do have a microwave but it's not in use
when these drops occur. I work from home and my closest neighbors are gone
during the day so I don't think I'm getting interference from them.

You don't use NetStumbler do you. The only time I ever experienced drops
was when running this. It took me a while to realise too, as I was using it
to help determine the cause of the problem :-)

Doesn't matter if they're home or not. If they have a 2.4GHz wireless
phone, it could interfere with your network if/when the phone rings.

Hi Dave,

Does your card use the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration tool, or does
DLINK supply a separate tool? If you're using the WZC, try checking to see
whether the "Use IEEE 802.1x authentication" box is checked in the
Authentication tab. If it is, it will cause the connection to briefly drop
on an intermittent basis. Turn this setting off.

I've had drop-outs with Linksys but never with NetGear.

That definitely seemed to be the problem on my laptop, which was having a
similar problem.

Others have reported problems with power saving modes?

No. (I honestly never heard of NetStumbler)
