Hello,

I'm about to buy an ADSLmodem/router and the Draytek 2600VG seems to
get a good write up. Any problems? Any other suggestions which are
less expensive?

Also, could I be wasting my money if I do not get an ADSL2+ compatible
router?

Cheers

Geoff

The 2600 range is in the process of being replaced with a new range.
You might be better off waiting a few weeks.

Take a look at the Draytek 2800 series that is in the process of being
introduced. DSL Warehouse have them in stock.

I've had two Draytek 2600 units here, and both were pathetic on wireless
performance. On tests, the Netgear DG834G well out-performed the 2600. The
Netgear DG834G also supports ADSL2+

Tony,

It can be very confusing reading newsgroups! I've seen quite a number
of negative comments re the DG834G - did you recently download sofware
upgrade? If yes, presumably it was OK?

Cheers

Peter,

I don't think there is a 2800 with the VoIP telephone sockets is
there? I guess one will be on its way?

Thats what I intended to convey but was to brief. AFAIK there will be one
shortly so if you can wait it would be best to do so. In any case Draytek
kit has a well deserved enviable reputation.

Yes, I did recently update a couple of DG834G MkII units to 3.01.25 (latest
firmware). Both upgrades went well.

I know there has been quite a few bad reports on the DG834G in the NG's, but
I can honestly say that I have been extremely pleased with the DG834G. It
will soon be 2 years since I first bought the first my DG834G (Mark I, large
silver unit), and since then I upgraded to a mark II (smaller white coloured
unit, still in production), and I have never had a problem with the DG83G.
Despite what some may say, I can only praise the Netgear DG834G. I have
only run three firmware versions (1.05.00, 2.10.22, and 3.01.25) All three
have been very stable. I have never tried running beta releases and always
waited until the full release was made available. I really think you could
do a lot worse than buying a DG834G and I doubt very much you would be
unhappy with its perfomance. It's wireless performance is excellent, and I
can't rate it highly enough. Add to this the fact they they can buy one at a
very good price online, thats a bonus.

The latest full firmware release is really good, and very stable indeed.
(not that any I have used have been bad) The setup menu's in the DG834G are
intuitive, well laid out and easy to configure. Geoff, I'm not just saying
this because I own a DG834G.... If I thought they were rubbish, I would be
saying so, but I really can't fault my units, and everyone I have fitted one
for, are very happy too. I have recently setup a unit for my sister for
use in Canterbury and I have just popped in remotely.... The unit has been
online for 995 hours :56minutes. I think that speaks for itself. My own
unit here has currently been connected 756 hours and last time it was
rebooted, was because I made some changes to the settings.

Just a word of warning, don't go for the GT model. If you do buy one get
the DG834G. Rock solid and worth every penny despite what some might keep
saying.

PS. If you do buy one and need any support in setting it up, I read this
group every day... I will be pleased to help....

Tony

In general it has, my home 2600 is just fine and has been for two years
odd now. There are a few wrinkles in a few areas though, usually when
the usage is non-typical and exercises the more exotic features.

Personally I think they're a good buy in nearly all home installations
and some small business installations.

If you can't wait for the 2800VG (or it's too expensive), then have look at
Ebay, there are usually some 2600's for sale, even 2600VG's. I bought one to
replace the 2600We, both have been utterly reliable.
That said there are alternatives:
Zyxel 2602HWL ~£155, ADSL2+, with landline pass-through, one phone can
handle both VoIP lines. Works well, I have got one in the family.
The Fritz!Box is just £139 from sipgate.co.uk and it's the best when it
comes to the VoIP bits,
but NOT yet ADSL2.
Regards,
Martin
