In the process of figuring out an unrelated issue, I discovered that my
download speed is slower when I have a router (Linksys WRT54G) wired
in-beween my cable modem and my PC.

With no router: 550 kBytes / sec
With router inline: 280 kBytes / sec

Why would this be?
I used a specific 64MB file set up by my cable company for download speed
testing. I did these two tests only minutes apart, so time-of-day traffic
differences should not be a factor.
