Download speeds differ 1 large vs many smaller files

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question. If not,
please advise.

My issue is - on our company network - we are using WinXP Pro SP2 pcs and
Win Server 2003 file servers. When downloading a large file from the server
to the pc, it is very fast. (For example, a 400 Mb file took only about 10
seconds to download.) However, when downloading multiple small files, the
download time is much greater. (For example, when downloading 5 files that
totaled only 10 Mb in size all together, it took over 5 minutes!)

Why is this happening and what can be done to make downloading multiple
files faster? Thanks.

you could try something like tetracopy

or copy handler:
http://www.copyhandler.com/en/downloads/2.html

these replace the standard windows file copy
