Download speed problem

Malcolm gets his broadband service from OneTel. The download speed is
abysmal.

I removed the USB modem and installed a router so I could see the connection
performance. It reports:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 15.0 26.0 db
Line Att. 49.5 31.0 db
Data Rate 576 288 kbps

This seems OK for a 500kbits/sec service. These figures do not improve if
the router only is connected to the test point in the master socket.

The router shows the connection has been up now for over 2 days.

However, in use the PC struggles to show web pages and fails to download
emails from the OneTel server - it times out.

I tried http://www.speedtest.net/ and after several minutes I can select the
server to test from. Then I got bored waiting - the download speed never
started to register anything.

I've tried to browse web pages at different times during the day, but not in
the evenings, and download speeds are generally very poor. Another user on
the same exchange has an account with Zen and sees very good performance.
Malcolm's phone number begins 01379 89****

Has anybody any experience of talking to technical support at OneTel? Will
they understand this problem and be able to do something about it?

Or should I admit defeat and migrate Malcolm to Zen ?

Have you tried doing a ping trace (if they're running XP) this would in
effect show you where the connection/choke point is. It is always good to
get as much information as possible before going to tech support. If it is
beyond Onetels servers there may be little or nothing they can do but if it
is proved to Onetels equipment & then they won't do anything then it's time
to migrate..

Well, the top post at adslguide's one.tel forum is 'Has One.Tel finally
died?'. Migrate.

Good point.

I was there yesterday and referred to:
http://www.more-solutions.co.uk/supp...test-user.html

As suggested there, I reconfigured the router with speedtest@startup_domain
and tried the bt speedtest URL http://speedtester.bt.com - but no response.
However with the router configured for the OneTel connection
http://speedtester.bt.com reported 484 kbits/sec. Other test sites I tried
performed similarly well. This was about 4.15 pm.

On other occasions however sites such as http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
have reported speeds less than 5 kbits/sec.

I rang OneTel. They suggested configuring the router with
speedtest@speedtest_domain and trying http://speedtester.bt.com - which
responded. Putting in the phone number brought up a message that I would
have to wait 30 minutes befote I could run the speed test again. This is
spectacularly unhelpful, since previous experience shows that the speed can
vary dramatically from minute to minute.

OneTel suggested that I run this test several times per day using both the
speedtest@speedtest_domain login and the OneTel login, and keep a detailed
log of the results.

The problem with this is that I would have to travel 15 miles to the site.
My customer, Malcolm, is a gentleman in his late 70's who showed no interest
whatever in learning to run these tests. So OneTel's suggestion was really
not practical.

Happily there is a second phone line at the premises so we have ordered ADSL
from Zen. If we get performance problems with this I think Zen will be more
helpful in resolving them.
