I realize NETbeui is no longer supported, and I realize
this isn't the best solution. That said, we have a fax
application on a DOS PC that worked very well on an NT4
domain. Until we have a better solution from the
application supplier, I need to get this working.
I have installed NETbeui on the server and it now show as
a network protocol. I have also followed the following
advice, except that my 2003 server is a DC:
Actually, it's not NetBEUI that's causing you problems.
Error 5 means that
there's a permissions or authentication issue.
The defaults for Windows Server 2003 do not allow Windows
95 and lower
clients to log on. You need to change the LAN Manager
Authentication level.
The KB article associated with this is
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=823659
Assuming a standalone machine rather than a DC, do the
following:
Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Local Security
Policy
Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security
Settings | Local
Policies | Security Options
The setting "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication
level" is the one
to note here. On Windows Server 2003, the default
is "Sent NTLM response
only" and your DOS client doesn't understand that.
The default under Windows XP is "Send LM and NTLM
responses". Note that
changing this setting for Windows Server 2003 will reduce
your security, but
it should allow your DOS clients to authenticate.
Hope this helps
Oli
When I try to logon to the domain, I still get Error 5
Access denied. I can logon from a W2K client using the
same username/password.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially from
Oli, since you seem well versed in such.
Thanks,
Allen
