don't have network password

I am trying to connect a win98SE to my primary XP Media Center PC
(w/connected printer). I have run the XP networking install disk on the
Win98 machine but it keeps asking me for a network password.

I have never created a network password for this machine. It doesn't
require any password to boot up, never has had one.

So how do I enter a password that was never created ??

Is Win98SE asking you for a network password when you start the
computer? If so:

1. Go to Control Panel | Network.

2. Set the primary network logon to Windows Logon.

3. Reboot, and log on with a user name and no password. It won't ask
for a logon again.

If that's not what's happening, please reply in the news group with
more information: what you're doing when the network password prompt
appears, and the complete and exact text of the prompt.

I had alreadydone these steps. The windows login is blank. When I tried to
select a network printer, it asks for the network password. No other info.
The network printers are named Printer1, etc. For some reason I now have 4
of them. I guess each time I've tried to install the XP setup disk on the
win98 machine it adds one. Does this help?

Don't run the XP setup disk again. You only have to do it once.

Please provide more information about the problem:

1. How are you trying to select a network printer?

2. What is the complete and exact text of the network password prompt?

3. Give any further details that will help someone else understand the
situation. We only know what you tell us.

I guess I have really really screwed this thing up because now I can't see
anything of the network neighborhood.
You said not to use the XP setup again, so what should I do here to start
clean? Is there some simple description of what should be done for both the
XP machine w/printer and 98 machine that I want to hook up that I can follow
from scratch?? This seems ridiculous for so simple a task as I'm trying do
do.

I had been having having similar problems to you but I mamaged to
sort it out somehow. Try turning of fyour firewall.
Also see my thread in windowsxp.general and the references to UPnP.
Fiddling with that seemed to help.
