Can anybody explain in simple layman terms the difference between using a
domain and a workgroup.

What are the advantages / disadvantages over each other.

TIA

If you have to ask, the difference is that you need a workgroup and not a
domain. :-)

Interesting Response, but it doesn't really answer my question, is the
answer a secret ?

Is there anyharm in educating others even if they do not need a Domain
(YET!), oneday I may come across a system where I will need one.....

So it would be helpful if you could elaborate on you answer, I am currently
under the impression that its only a word set by MS to confuse home users
and to give IT professionals something to discuss and make them look
superior ?

A domain is a group of computers administered and controlled by one or more
central servers known as domain controllers. A workgroup is a group of
computers where all computers are 'peers' on the network with each PC
controlling its own resources.

For starters, unless you have a WinNT Server, Win2000 Server or
Win2003 Server in the mix to act as the domain controller, you are
limited to a workgroup.

With a domain you have a centralized computer to control access to
files and periphials. You can allow or deny certain users or groups
of users the ability to access files that are located on a server.
With a workgroup, each computer is responsible for controlling access
to it's own resources.

Hope that helps...
