Hello,
We are running a Windows 2003 server with SP1 and our domain name is:
Example.local. However, we have Exchange and would like to use it for
external mail and have a registered domain name of Example.com. Can I easily
change the domain name of the network without having to reconfigure the
settings on the client machines?
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
You can change the name of the domain. This can be easy or complex depending
on size and what services you have running. However there is no need for the
internal AD domain and the external Mail domain to match up. It's not
necessary and it's not even really relevant. For example many people use
domain.net for internal resolution, and domain.com for external. Or
lan.domain.com for internal and domain.com for external. The external DNS
and the internal DNS should never be the same, so it does not really matter
whether the zones have the same name or not. @domain.com is just a way for
the internet to route mail to the mail server using the public MX record.
When you set up Exchange you will just tell it the name of the external
domain being used for mail.
Hope that helps,
Anthony,

Hello,

a domain rename is not a piece of cake. It's not about the AD part, which
works, but things around like:
-SMS (must reinstall)
-SQL (windows account)
-Citrix
-Windows services with domain account
-Scheduled tasks

I have blogged our domain rename:
http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com/20...name-done.html

Jorge posted also on it:

You MUST prepare the job !

It is NOT necessary to change a something.local domain to something.com for
exchange. In fact, the .local is there to stop confusion with an internal
..com name and an external .com name.

I have several clients that have company_name.local AND internal exchange
servers. All works fine. They also have hosted Web sites (outside their
networks) and the .local internal name helps reduce any confusion.

You are right, i didn't see it was only for exchange !

A domain rename just for exchange email domain doesn't mean the pain..

Just add the additionnal domain you bought to your users 's email through
recipient's policy

You do make an EXTREMELY important point for this or ANY change:

"You MUST prepare the job." Put as much time in planning as you feel
necessary. Then review the plan and do it over. Poor planning has added
tens of hours to a project in fixing problems because of poor planning.
