Domain name required?

I'm running Server 2003 w/ SP1 in a single domain. I have an issue when
trying to access recourses from outside the domain. For example, if I try to
access a folder while on a laptop that is not joined I will have to specify
domain\username. This is becoming a hassle since we're adding more users.
How can I specify ONLY the username?

Thank You,

You can't. Join the computers to the domain. Or get used to domain\username
or (E-Mail Removed)l.

You can't unless the resource is directly on a domain controller. If a
simple ID is specified the Windows machines will use the local userid
store of the machine to determine if the userid specified is correct, it
won't just start trying trusted domains.

Hi Joe

Are you sure about this?
I know that could represent security issues, but... what about the option
under control painel "Stored users Name and passwords" Network Passwords can
be defined under that option.

I hope that the information above helps you.
Have a Nice day.

That isn't the question, he wants to connect to a remote machine with a
short userid and password. Unless you send the full credentials,
regardless of how that is done, it will not work.

You guys are both correct.

If poster has all relevant account on the non-joined machines
configured (by running control keymgr.dll) to always send a
domain\username when accessing any host.domain.tld machine,
then the users of the non-joined laptops would not get any login
prompting (unless and/or until the stored creds are out of sync
with the specificed domain account). This does assume that the
use of keymgr has not been disabled on the non-joined machines
in their local policy.
