How long after a .co.uk domain name's renewal date does it become
available for purchase? Note, I'm not paoching but trying to register a
name that someone has a reasonable right to without having to pay
'transfer fees' of £500 to a squatter.

What makes you think the current "squatter" is not going to renew ?

Well, the current registrant has several hundred domains, some of which
have been expiring over the past two months and they've not been
renewing them. The domain I'm interested in expires early next year.
This domain got registered after a mailshot was replied to by a
secretary at a local company I deal with, the next mailshot was little
short of a demand for £500 to 'register' the name and build a 'high
quality' website that consisted of a front page and nothing else for an
on-going payment of only £250 per year.

It is several months. There is a grace period to allow the original
registrant to renew after expiry. You will find the exact answer on
http://www.nic.uk/
