Thanks for all your help so far with broadband providers & modems!
It's been a big help to me and I'm understanding it all more and more.
So far, Pipex looks the best for me pricewise but there seems a snag.

I also want to get at least 1 domain name and the associated email
addresses.
I have had a domain which has expired and emails have all been delivered
using my unmetered dialup isp. I have been able to access my online
mail administration and set up corresponding pop3/smtp accounts in
Outlook Express. This is exactly how I want my new service to work.
BUT...reading Pipex's site - they can register a domain for you (£100+!!)
but they will charge you another £200++!! to manage that domain ie
host your website and forward emails to your pipex email address.
1. This is too expensive
2. I don't want them forwarded, I want them sent direct so I can reply using
whichever domain email addresses I want to.

For the past 2 years all this has cost me absolutely nothing as the domain
name
was a free package when signing up with Fast24. I certainly don't expect to
get it for free again (though it would be nice!) but £300++ is ridiculous.

So could anyone explain how I can get what I want for a low price and
tie it in to my broadband service (Is Pipex a one off in charging this and
are there any other good bb ips who can do what I want?)
I have seen many sites who provide cheap domains but how do I access
my website and email properly. Do they want you to buy hosting wit
them instead of paying the isp? (Website isn't such an issue, it's my own
domain email that's most important)

Sorry for the length, would really appreciate help.

Have a look at freeparking.co.uk. I use them for a number of domains, there
is no web space, but they can offer seamless redirection. They have POP3
email, which is delivered to your email client.

HTH

Cheers

Thanks Nick but I checked it and they only give you 2 pop3 email addresses
which it (and you) say you can download into your email client but nothing
about replying and sending your domain mail from your email client.
This is what's important to me and it is getting very frustrating when this
isn't explained clearly what you're getting.

You can reply/send with any "from" address you want unless your ISP's
smarthost has a limitation on that (which Pipex don't).

No offence intended but I'm not convinced you understand the first
thing about email....

<snip>

I'm curretly using 1&1 to host my domain name and emails. It works out at £6
a year for the email and £2 year for the domain name.
I have the domain setup to forward to my ADSL IP address (static, through
eclipse) which has a server stiing behind my router with ports 80 and 21
forwarded to it.

Which is why I'm here! I do know that the set up I've had is the one I want.
I find that things aren't clearly explained on isp websites and if I
struggle to
understand exactly what I'm getting then I feel really sorry for people new
to the internet and PCs!

Hamman, I don't want forwarding. I want to set up all my domain emails
into outlook express. All these hosting sites go on about forwarding but
few seem to provide the pop3/smtp domain service or if so, not enough
and at too high a price!

AFAIK the email is true pop3/smtp, but the *website* domain has to be
forwarded to the server (obviously, otherwise there would be no site)

John,

I'm not sure why you would want to pay for pop3/smtp services when (I
assume) you have them through Pipex and (again, I assume) they work.

I'd go to somewhere like Godaddy, pay $10 for a domain name and email
forwarding, and set it up so that mail gets forwarded to your Pipex account
which you can then retreive using POP3.

For sending mail, like others have said, it should just be a case of setup
Outlook Express to send mail using you@yourdomain as the "From" address.

I don't wish to sound rude, but I'm not overly clear what you want to
acheive other than having your own domain and being able to send/receive
emails to/from it which you could do using the above?

regards
Paul

The 1&1 domain package does exactly that, you use thier servers for POP3 and
SMTP (3 POP accounts, upto 200 forwarding accounts)
You can forwad your domain to any site, you can even earn money back on with
it with a company like sedo.com or point it to some free geocities / tripod
space.
