domain authentication

hello,

i have a 7-computer network, with 1 xp machine, 2 win2k machines, 3
linux machines and one sunos machine. right now, i have local logon
for each machine. this is getting a bit tedious, as for example, the
main machine from which i do email is different from the machine at
which i do most of my "work" work. so, i typically have an ssh
terminal open to the email machine.

i'm thinking i would like to get around this by setting up a logon
domain that would give me access to the same basic configuration
options no matter where i am logged in. for example, it's an unending
nuisance to have a half-dozen address books, sets of web bookmarks and
so forth.

i'm really fumbling in the dark. what's the best way to go about
this? i already use samba to share my printer and files. winbind
looks like an option, but whatever solution i use, i prefer it to be
linux-based. (i do have a copy of win2k server but i prefer not to use
it for a dc if i can help it.) any tips, advice, pointers to
documentation/tutorials would be appreciated.

thanks.

mp

Hi...

I'd suggest setting-up Linux as a Primary Domain Controller (to use an
MS term) and have all Windows and LInux boxes authenticate from it.
Also, LDAP might be an option if the Linux boxes won't authenticate
from Samba, which they should.

Here's a HowTo that might help:
http://us1.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/...PDC-HOWTO.html

Also, a good book that covers this is Integrate Linux Solutions into
Your Windows Network by Dustin Puryear, ISBN: 0761527915. Great
resource that covers this.

As for the Sun OS... I'm not sure about that one as I've never used
that OS before.

Hope this helps,

Alex.
