I don't want to run my own email server but I would like to cut down on the
amount of spam I get. I have a Windows XP machine that runs 24/7. is there
any free software that I could run on this machine that would periodically
log on to my ISPs mailboxes and remove spam - either by deleting it or
moving it to a "spam" folder

Try POPfile

popfile.sourceforge.net

Filters your E-mail as you receive it. Marks the SPAM as spam, and can
filter other categories as well (I use it to no only filter SPAM, but
also to mark advertising mail that I want/don't mind receiving from
firms I do business with into an ADVERT folder).

Once set up and trained it work brilliantly - and its free.

Pass it through a GoogleMail account. I have several domain names, mail is
sent to a GoogleMail account, and automatically forwarded to a mail pick up
address. The spam is left behind in the Google account.

That's what I do. All my business mail is sent to Googlemail. They are
very good at removing spam. The messages are then forwarded from
Google to mail addresses on my ISP.

I tried using googlemail as a pop3 mailserver once, but ISTR it was set
up so that all my outgoing mail appeared to come from something like
"(E-Mail Removed) on behalf of (E-Mail Removed)" (or vice
versa) - either way it was no good at all.

Did I miss something?

I'm using the forwarding provided by my website host.

I've no idea how to set up Thunderbird for outgoing mail. I use Agent
for both email and news. There are some setting up instructions at

Thats only in the headers though its not in the from or reply fields so it
does not have any implications for the address people actually use to
communicate with you.

Brilliant but simple! Set up and works a treat. Spam in my POP3 inbox nil -
spam in the Google spam folder - lots!
