How does WRT54G/Alchemy client mode select APs?

In client mode, my AP is communicating with my AirPort 802.11b AP. In the
configuration process, I didn't enter the AirPort's IP address, nor a gateway
IP.

There are several APs in the area. How did/does the WRT54G select this
particular AP to establish a link with? How do I select a different AP as my
"target"? I don't see a mechanism for switching APs.

(The Site Survey feature in this firmware isn't working for me. Does this
play some role in switching APs?)

WRT54Gv3; Sveasoft Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv (what does the "v3.37.6.8sv"
mean?)

Thanks,

Please, no "Go Google this" replies. I wouldn't
ask a question here if I hadn't done that already.
