I work for a company. We have our own domain with 2003 servers. Weareowned by
our sister comapny however they have there own domain name. We use private ip
addressing 10.208.70.0 and they use 10.208.8.0.

How can we access eachothers data. I was under the assumption that when a
private ip goes on the net it's shot down.

I would have thought that someone has created a VPN or "Virtual Private
Network" between the two sites. This creates a "tunnel" between your two
sites that allows traffic to flow across the internet while the contents of
your traffic remain isolated from the internet. Hence the internet routers
can't see your private addresses.

That is really the only way correct.I mean it doesnt have anything to do with
domain trust. I am not really sure. So there is a vpn and we occasionally add
some host files or add routes and can see the other machines.

It would be a Site-to-Site VPN. You won't "add routes ocasionally". You
design the routing scheme for the entire system while considering the "big
picture",...it is done once and left alone,...you don't do it "ad hoc along
the way" with static routes on individual machines.

I couldn't tell you how to design the routing plan without knowing exactly
how both LANs and the VPN setup was built,...there are too many variables.

This has nothing to do with Domains or trusts.

To add to Phillip's comments, There may well be a trust arrangement setup
between your domain and the parent company domain, in fact if you're in the
same Active Directory forest then there has to be. But this is independant
of the way you're connected.

The VPN is creating a pipeline between your site and their site, to allow
data to flow between the two sites, this is a "physical" connection; the two
sites have a connection between them at a low level. The arrangement of your
two domains is a logical arrangement at a higher level, that is not really
related to the "pipework" other than the fact it may well be using it.

As Phillip says, you'll probably have a site-to-site VPN connection so that
you don't need to fiddle with routes and adding machines all the time.
