I need to be able to access internet with this W2K3 PC from time to
time. Do I really need a 3rd party firewall ?. Since I have tried
Outpost Pro 2.1 and Norton Corp Client 8.12, it creats tons problem
here and there, especially with the SQL Server 2000 enterprise
installed.

Anyone please share their experience if have similar odd setup.

Hi,

Of course, it is strongly suggested. Perhaps a NAT device like a Linksys
router would be a good solution in your case. It may not have a firewall,
but at least the only ports open will be the ones you manually open, so if
you do get infected with a trojan horse or something similar, a remote
hacker shouldn't be able to connect

A server should always have a separate hardware firewall. But the
personal firewalls you describe really aren't any different from what
you get with the built-in firewall, it's all up to which is easier for
you to configure properly.

While I would not recommend for Domain Controllers (IPSec filters would be
better), I use ZoneAlarm Pro for my file and print servers, as well as
Windows 2003 machines I have set up as a workstation. While not
"officially" supported by Zone Labs, I have not had any issues. I suspect
they will support it before long, unless ICF gets the facelift that SP2 will
provide Windows XP.

Thanks for all suggestions. What I really mean is does W2K3 Server
offer its own protection enough ?
Or
As per suggestion that a router might help. I have a Netgear MR814
wireless router, but I no trust and/or confident that I can utilize
this router's firewall features fully, plus it is still an unknow,
whether this router's firewall is sufficiently enough ?

More tips are welcome.
