This may be OT, but darned if I know where else is more appropriate to
start...

I keep getting a pop-up or whatever you call it, headed 'Do you think
you're smart', with an address like this:
http://a.tribalfusion.com/p.media/FU...37796/pop.html

Where does it come from and how can I block it please?

Install Spywareblaster and update it weekly.

Run a combination of "Spybot search and destroy" and Lavasoft Adaware on
your system.

Install

http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/eDexter.html

on your pc to kill adverts stone dead, using

http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html

to keep it up2date.

If you are using win32 remember to follow the instructions w.r.t
configuring DNS correctly or it'll make your PC run rather slowly.

Enjoy much quicker surfing as a consequence.

As per the other post Spybot Search & Destroy is pretty damn good - i`ve
got a newbie setup guide here, as well as links to other useful anti-
spyware apps (hijackthis / cwshredder):

www.phoenixbbs.co.uk

If you use the "hosts" file part of the guide, my wife told me she had
problems with some sites, so I had to remove it from her machine - never
had any problems with mine though, so i`d install it initially and only
get rid if it really does cause you problems.

Thanks very much Greg. A few follow-up queries please:

Do you mean I should use both Spybot AND Spywareblaster (as well as
Adaware)? I have downloaded Spybot so far.

I run Adaware regularly, but find that within an hour or so I have a
clutch of familiar suspects back again. Researching further this
morning, for example, that tribalfusion one is back again, and half a
dozen others.

Just studied that page, and the link to 'Hosts'. Find it rather
daunting to be honest! First sentence "

That looks better. Downloaded and installed a hosts file to default
folder. Looking at in a text editor it seems very comprehensive, with
over a thousand entries.

I use XP Home. Not sure what you mean about win32?

Thanks Colin. Installed it and doing first scan now. Do you use both
this and Adaware? And what about Spywareblaster that Greg recommended?
(See also my reply to him.) Do I need more than one?

Looks good. Will study asap.

OK, will do. What sort of problems did she have that I should be alert
for please?

Wow - guess I need to be careful here! Spybot found 19 (red) entries.
But 6 of these were 'DSO Exploit', for which the description reads:
"There's a security hole in IE allowing websites to execute code
without asking you first. You can find more information at
http://security.greymagic.com/adv/gm001-ie/"

But that page is dated 2002. And I've been regularly using Windows
Update to install critical updates. So doesn't that mean I should no
longer have that security exposure, and therefore not need to remove
these 6 entries? Yet, in that case, why does Spybot identify them? If
I *do* remove them, can that do any harm anyway?

As you see, I'm a tad nervous about this, so would appreciate a little
more advice please <g>.

Don't use IE?

Seriously, download Firefox .8 or Mozilla 1.6/1.7 (www.mozilla.org), use
Adaware etc to clean the system, reboot and install the downloaded browser.
Browse with said browser (perhaps after enabling the popup killer / cookie
queries) and see how life goes.

Yes, some sites are IE only, but you'll probably be pleasantly suprised by
the alternatives to IE.

Yep, defence in depth is essential. Adaware and Spybot compliment each
other in coverage.

>I have downloaded Spybot so far.

Spywareblaster innoculates your system against activeX malware, preventing
your browser from ever running it.

Spywareblaster and the use of a hosts file will sort most of that.

edexter is mini web server sitting on localhost which will replace a banner
ad image with a transparent gif, if the site is matched in the hosts file.

If you google about, you can find ones with close to 20000 entries.

This one

http://remember.mine.nu/

for example contains over 15000.

Windows Update, scan with spybot & adaware regularly, keep your AV up to
date - you'll be fine.
