Does NTL cable modem block 56K dialup modem?

I am trying to get my old 56K PCI modem working again. Seems as if my
XP Pro/SP2 won't recognise the 56K modem.

I get some message about an XP service not being on but 'Telephony' and
'RPC' are running.

---

After the 56K modem was last working, I installed NTL broadband with its
Ambit modem attached to the PC using Ethernet.

Is there anything which the NTL installation might have done to prevent
the 56K card being recognised?

Not in theory - if you can navigate to the connections panel, you should be
able to see all your possible connections, so unless the NTL install deleted
hardware it was superseding there should be no problem.

OTOH many devices (e.g. Scanners, printers, modems etc.) require that you
install software FIRST before plugging in the device.

E.g. my camera. If I install its software then it comes up as a slide show
etc., if not it is just an attached drive with jpegs on it (useful for
emergencies at someone elses house).
