I apologize if this is not the right place to ask this question. I am
using my Linux PC as Internet gateway to the internet, so all my
Internet traffic is routed over this PC. Now I want do get some
statistical information about the traffic and port rates and packet
info. Is there anyway kernel-level SNMP supported (System load info,
Device statistics). I need to retrieve some device info using SNMP, can
I do with Linux 2.4/2.6?. Thanks.

Install and turn on the SNMP server. Make sure your firewall blocks
SNMP. You may also need to modify the configuration, since ifTable may
not be made available by default.

As well as SNMP server as mentioned by the other poster. A useful tool
is MRTG. It is a program which collects SNMP data from routers,
firewall's etc and displays the data in real time HTML graphs which
you can then monitor via any web browser.

You may also have a look at IPAC (IPACNG), even if it doesn't use SNMP.

I think it is usually called net-snmp ,
eg on Fedora-4 there is a net-snmp RPM.
