How does iptables 1.3.5 communicate with the kernel

Please can anyone tell me how does iptables 1.3.5 communicate with the
kernel? I have found a number of netlink sockets in the code but i am
not able to get much .Is it thru netlink sockets only?Can anyone
explain in detail with the help of userspace structures?

Either look at the source code or use 'strace'.
