What does the future hold for ADSL?

Just an odd musing really, given that I am deliriously happy with Broadband
anyway, but I was wondering what the future holds for ADSL.

I am in a marginal 512k max area - about 3km from the exchange. My ISP
(Pipex) is offering 1Mb and 2Mb services, but I can't get either of these
because of the distance. My 512k connection is very fast and stable, but one
day I would like more!

I read about ADSL2 and ADSL2+ supporting speeds up to 24Mb (assuming you
live less than 50metres from the exchange!) but are these just pipe dreams
for me? Will I ever get more than 512k? What, theoretically, can my copper
wires support and should I think about moving house!!?

what is your downstream attenuation and SNR / noise margin ? The BT
database is fairly conservative.

a theoretical speed curve for different technologies is at
http://whatismyspeed.sourceforge.net/demo/
it appears to overstate the speed by a fair margin but illustrates the
different technologies

Yes, I mentioned both of those in my original post - but the query was, how
likely is someone who can only get 512k likely to get anything more, now or
in the future?

Well one thing we know for damn sure - BT will never, ever, ever offer it. Simply because they are
a necrosis-ridden dinosaur. My mate in Canada has the "budget" connection - only 5mb. And BT are
struggling to upgrade us to 2mb.

if you can get 512k then you should theoretically be able to get 1mb or 2 mb
as they removed the distance limits nearly a year ago, myself we had 512k
with wannadoo and they kept telling us I couldn't have 2mb this was via
their web page, i kept trying and then one day it said i could recieve it so
I hit upgrade and that was it, so keep battering away at your ISP

They work better if you have attenuation and SNR figures. If there are any
details available from your equipment, then whether you can get some better
speed out of your line might be more easily determined. Peter Morgan.

Don't be so sure..

BT Wholesale are currently trialling faster (upto 8MB ADSL) services and
(upto 18-24MB) ADSL2+ services

I would expect the 8MB services to go live by the end of this year..
