Does channel matter?

Ok, first lets say there no difference in the interferance from other
2.4Ghz devices.

I have Dell Truemobile 1150 (hacked with Orinico firmware and client
manager). and I'm going to get an external
antenna. So my question is does anyone know of a website or personal
experience as to what channel is best. Although the antenna will work over
the frequency range assigned to 802.11b I'm assuming that most
manufacturers
probably design there antennas to work best at a specific frequency. Please
add you insight.

The 802.11 channels are spaced at 5MHz increments beginning at 2412MHz
(channel 1). Assuming that an external antenna destined for the American
market (channels 1 through 11) is tuned for channel 6 (2437MHz), the
lowest (1) and highest (11) channels are 25MHz below and above this
frequency, representing a difference of plus or minus 1% in frequency
and wavelength.

I will have to let the RF gurus who read this newsgroup explain the
exact effect such a difference would have on signal strength. My
layman's guess is that it would be tiny, insignificant among all the
other variables.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, the only reason to change
channels is to avoid interference with other nearby wifi equipment.
Non-wifi emissions in the 2.4GHz band, principally from cordless phones,
seem to interfere equally, or at least unpredictably, with any or all of
the 802.11 channels. As always, your mileage may vary, and there's no
harm in experimenting.

Most antennas are designed to work across all 2. 4 GHz channels.
If interference is not an issue, you can pick any channel.
