What does "awaiting capacity" mean??

I've been eagerly awaiting broadband where I live for a good while. The
local exchange was due to become broadband enabled on 28th Sept. It is a
small country exchange serving less than 100 homes.

I signed up with Plusnet a month in advance - and gave a months notice of
quitting to ntlworld :-(

When 28th Sept arrived, Plusnet took payment and informed me that the "line
is capable of supporting broadband" and that I could expect to be connected
in 7 to 10 days,

I emailed them after 20 days and they replied:

"Unfortunately we cannot supply you with broadband. You live in an exchange
where there is low demand for broadband, and we currently have no capacity
at this exchange."

So I signed up with Virgin/NTL who also said it would take 7 to 10 days to
connect me. I enquired about this by phone a few days later, and a pleasant
helpful chap said they were getting the message "awaiting capacity" - and
that this meant there were too many people on broadband here and I'd have to
wait until someone else gave it up!!

I phoned BT who could tell me nothing at all, except that it would be no
quicker if I signed up with them.

I wondered if anyone here could interperet the "awaiting capacity" message
or advise me where to ask. I've tried emailing BTWholesale, but have
received no reply.

according to that site - which I haven't tried before: ADSL enable date: 07
Nov 2005

According to the BT site and http://www.behind-you.co.uk/scotland/ it has
been enabled for a while. Oh well I'll wait and see. Thanks

Occasionally the ready for service date is pushed back , this happened
earlier in the year to my parents exchange and resulted in a similar
message.

You mean dialup??? There is no problem getting dialup. I've signed up with
NTL/Virgin for Broadband and was trying to find out if and when I could
expect to be connected, and if the information I'd got about dialup here
being full up, was correct.

I think he meant for you to contact them and see what is wrong with the
exchange.

Oh right. Sorry to be dim. I did contact them and a pleasant
helpful chap said they were getting the message "awaiting capacity" - and
that this meant there were too many people on broadband here and I'd have to
wait until someone else gave it up. I found that hard to believe hence this
post.

No, it was me that got it wrong! I was assuming you had NTL cable
broadband already not NTL dialup, and wanted ADSL broadband...

Thats OK. I'm rather prone to not reading the OP properly myself.
