If both machines are running Windows XP Professional you can use remote
Desktop which is included with the OS. Otherwise TightVNC or one of its
siblings does the same sort of thing for free.

i have a pc which is connected to the interent thru a cable modem (ntl), and
i have just got a second tower unit, and i would like to if possible connect
the tower, so i can have it running, without the need for an additional
monitor?

so is this possible, and what "tools" will i need to enable me to do it?

Just get a KVM Switch where you share the monitor keyboard, mouse, internet
mite be a problem, u may need a hub, both machine will have to have ethernet
cards

The options are to use either software or hardware.

The first hardware solution is a "KVM switch" that will allow you to use
one keyboard/monitor/mouse for two machines. Two caveats: set the BIOS
of both machines so that they will boot without a keyboard, and don't
use cheap cables to hook up the monitor.

If both machines use XP you can use desktop sharing.

The other software solution is some variant of VNC that will allow you
to connect to one machine over a network and control it. Obviously you
need also need a network card in each machine and a hub or switch.
Consider upgrading your modem to a multi port router so that each
machine can access the Internet independently.

To expand a bit on the good advice already offered.
VNC or TightVnc work fine, free and are available for most operating
systems but are prety slow, it is really just a maintenance/teaching
tool the KVM swich might be a better option.
Another option is a dummy keyboard and mouse adaptor (available from
Maplin) that allows the keyboard and mouse to be plugged and unplugged
safely.

For your connection to the ntl cable modem without using microsoft ICS
or some other (ie better) proxy (for example "Freeproxy" or "Lansuite
602") you need a broadband router between the computers and the modem.
Note this isn't an ADSL router but a "Broadband sharing Router" and can
be bought from the likes of Ebuyer for less than 20 pounds +vat and p&p.
You will of course also need ethernet port if not already fitted, cheap
Realteck RL 8139 PCI cards work very nicely.
