Document Management

Hello all!

First, I know this is a little off topic, but I trust fellow network
admins more than anyone.

Background: W2k/2k3 mixed environment. 10 servers, 150 clients.

Our file server is severely cluttered. It host files from IT,
Customer Service, Execs, Admins, Accounting, Manufacturing, and some
other misc. stuff. It is so cluttered and has been around so long
there it is difficult to ensure that permissions are set correctly.
Some documents are only for the department and some must be shared to
others (yes we have sharepoint, but our users can't seem to ((or want
to)) grasp that, and I don't really blame them).

I am hoping that someone can point me to a method of document
management. I am not looking for some fix all "solution" that someone
is selling; I just need some common sense pointers, tips and best
practices.

Thanks for helping,
Mark

hello,

document the way it works, and publish it to the user.
The worst is when users aren't aware of the purpose of shares

for the cleaning part:
search for clone / old / huge files.
Add automatic cleaning to temporary location
defrag the volume
chkdsk
[...]
