Hello,

I have a Toshiba Portege 300CT Laptop (133 MHZ). When I put my PheeNet
WLAN PCMCIA Card in one of the Card-Slots, the Laptop does not
recognize the card. Even the lights of the card are not burning. Do
WLAN cards work only in faster computers or do they work in older
Laptops, too? Is this a problem of the PC or of the card?

Tim

I put a NetGear PCMCIA card in my old CTX 166mhz Win95 laptop. With a Cat5
cable connected, I get lights but have so far been unable to get a connection
from my DSL router. I suspect it is a software problem, although I did install
the NetGear and Actiontec software. Hardware-wise it seemed to be fine. W95
recognizes the card.

i reckon it's a problem with your pcmcia slot. older pcmcia slots are
16bit only and do not support the newer 32bit cardbus pc cards. i
believe you can get a 16bit wireless pcmcia card - but don't quote me on
that. From memory, if your machine is older than about 1997 it probably
doesn't have the 32bit pcmcia slot (also called cardbus). but again -
dont quote me....

I've been running a Lucent ( Orinoco ) Silver in my Pentium 100 laptop with
Win95 with no problems for over a year now. Works great.

I've got an SMC 2632 card running in a early-1990s Thinkpad (486/75)
with NT4. Works great for e-mail and ***very*** light web browsing.
