Do Tiscali let you act as a server?

Hi,

I'm considering switching to Tiscali.

Before I do, I need to confirm certain aspects of their service.

Firstly, do they allow you to let your PC act as a server? I've got
some music files that I access remotely - generally from work - that my
PC needs to act as a server.

Also, I occasionally set my PC up as an FTP server to remotely access
certain files.

Any info much appreciated.

eno

FATAL ERROR !

Reset variables and restart ISP selection process, avoiding Tiscali,
Talk-Talk etc

They don't appear to block any incoming TCP connections, but upstream
bandwidth is quite limited (as with any other ADSL service) and you get a
(different) dynamically allocated IP address every time you connect.

But there are several outfits offering free dynamic DNS with refreshing SW.

They do but not for commercial purposes on a home account. You will find
that if outstanding amounts of data are transferred between 6 and 11pm they
will tell you off.
ISPs use a different dictionary to the English one we use in the UK.
Contracts almost fall in to The Unfair Contract Terms Act.
Tiscali is much the same as other ISPs, only people paying two or three
times the cost will never want to look foolish and say they also have
problems.

Tiscali will not allow you to run a web server, as I found out a few weeks
ago. Using the service to serve webpages or other services is not allowed
on the home user package. Ring and ask them if you dont believe me.

Basically if you do any more than light browsing between 6pm and 11pm you`ll
be considered as an excessive user and will be put onto a slower connectin
shared by all the bad boys.

Do you not read this newsgroup? Tiscali come up for a lot of criticism in
here and its not just for fun you know.

If you are still not convinced, have a read of this:
http://www.3dvelocity.com/articles/t.../broadband.htm

If you want a reliable service, dont get trapped with this one for 12
months. Its really not worth the hassle.

Steve

Speak for yourself, chum. All ISPs have problems, but unlike Tiscali,
the more expensive ones acknowledge the fact, get off their backsides,
admit it and fix it. And if BT need chasing they do it without delay. It
has been well documented here that Tiscali will try to fob the customer
off as much as possible rather than actually have to pay BT to get
something checked out.

Hi,

I would not choose Tiscali, they are in habit of not providing service
only invoices hence I moved away from them. Check
http://www.getbroadband-online.co.uk/ for your best options instead.
Hope this helps...pappa

Don't know about 80 but SSH works.
I don't use them myself as they are so crap btw.

And so do some of the smaller ones.
Plusnet, for instance, has been whipping itself in public for a few months
now, apologising for their poor service of late and publishing details of
recovery plans, reorganisations and the like.
At least they're being up-front about their problems and "appear" to be
getting things right-ish again...

George.
