i have the exact same setup. it was a while ago so i dont remember the
exact sequence of steps but i got it working in the end and was not as
difficult as it at first appeared.
1) join each computer to a workgroup--the default workgroup name is
"workgroup"--and give each computer a name that you can remember
2) open "windows exporer" on your laptop. find a folder you want to share
and using the right mouse button choose "sharing options" and enable sharing
3) on your dektop, go to "my network places," and you now should be able to
see the new folders
the above is the goal. there are various ways of getting there. you can
use the network wizard. or i believe the network identification tab in the
system folder of the control panel. the important thing for a small network
like yours/ mine is that you join each computer to a "workgroup" not a
"domain."
for security reasons you should choose names for your computers that are not
too obvious. and at some point--perhaps after you're sure its working--you
should change the name of the workgroup also. to change either the computer
name, or the worgroup name, use the network identification tab in the system
folder of the control panel.
i'm no expert, but this worked for me. try it out for yourself at your own
risk.
