How do I set a password for modem/router?

I have Win XP with a Comcast cable modem and Netgear router.

It was setup by the Comcast guy with no password. How do I reset it
with a password?

Log into the router and create a password.

If that seems vague it's because your question was vague. Are you
asking how to password-protect access to the router? Are you asking
how to password-protect the Netgear's wireless signal? Are you asking
something else entirely? Does the Netgear router have a model number,
hardware revision, and firmware version?

And use that info to go to the netgear site and download the manual.
