I am using the Linksys BEFW11S4 and want to allow access to only one
webpage to start, for instructions and authentication, and upon
authentication open the gateway completely. I have no idea where to
start.

Any one done this yet?

There are wireless routers/AP's which will route initial HTTP requests
to a default login page. I just reviewed the BEFw11S4's manual. It does
not appear to have that capability.

There are many scripts that will check to see if a site visitor has entered
and authorised from the default page. If not, the visitor,s browser is
redirected back to the default page. Once logged in and authorized through
the default page a session is created for the visitor so that they can go
to any page for a specified session duration or until the visitor leaves.

Check out some asp, jsp, php, perl, etc. scripts that do session management
and access authorization.

These scripts reside on your web server not on your router.

You have a pay option (Sputnik @ http://www.sputnik.com/) and a free Linux
option (NoCATAuth @ http://nocat.net/wiki/index.cgi?HomePage)

Enjoy!

The BEFW11S4 does not support this function. You will need an AP that
does include that function, or you will need to place a "gateway"
component between your Linksys and the your backhaul to provide this
function, the NetGear DSA-3100, for example (http://www.d-
link.com/products/?pid=173)

You could, of course, build your own gateway using a cast-off PC, Linux,
and NoCatAuth or the Sputnik Community Gateway.

You could do this with NoCat, but it will take some customization.

A much simpler approach is something like the WSG-5000
(http://www.flatline.com/wsg5000.htm). The beauty of this device is that
even though it can support "free" access, it requires users to come INTO
the business before they can gain access to anyting besides the logon
page.

This does exactly what you want: www.dnsredirector.com

Runs on a windows machine, using IIS as the webserver, there are sample
pages available on the site but you can develop your own just as well in
whatever language you like best.

Well, our product FirstSpot should do what you want. Please visit:

http://patronsoft.com/firstspot

To summarize, FirstSpot is a Windows-based product that provides captive
portal and some other tracking features. The pricing is server-based so it
is more flexible for you to structure your access package. It is full
customizable and there is no need to tie to any pricing structure.
