Do I need a network card (revisited)

I have copied my earlier post and the reply it received (see below) and
almost solved the problem, but ran into a glitch.

I ran the network setup wizard on the XP computer and it created a floppy
containing netsetup.exe
I then ran netsetup on the windows 98 box and it went to completion okay,
but the last step is to shutdown.
During the shutdown I got the Blue screen of death and had to power down to
shut it down.

When I restarted both computers each computer was able to read and write
files to itself and to the opposite computer.
That was pretty good, but a problem soon presented itself..

The HP printer on the Win98 Box shows up as a shared printer in the printers
and faxes part of the XP control panel under printers and faxes. BUT it's
status is showed as "opening" .
It never arrives at the "ready" state.

I checked the printer directly from the Windows 98 box and it functioned
perfectly.

At this point I ran out of time and decided to adk for help instead of just
tinkering around.

Install a network card, either wired or wireless, in the Windows 98SE
box. Then, you'll be able to print from the laptop through the router
to the 98SE box.

The simplest way to set everything up is to run XP's Network Setup
Wizard on both computers -- it will automatically share the printer
and install it on XP. Tell the Wizard that they connect to the
Internet through a residential gateway.

so you installed a network card in win98 ....did it setup ok ...no problems
?

if the NIC was not setup properly then it could give the BSOD when trying to
configure the network.

Thanks for the fast response.

The original configuration included the Win98 computer and an HP printer and
a Cable modem and it worked fine.

I was upgrading it to include a wireless laptop and a wireless router There
was already a network card in the Win98 (second edition ) box. and it was
working properly.
Part of the upgrade was to make the wireless laptop print to the HP printer
on the Win98 box.


The dell wireless router (like most other wireless routers) incorporates a
four ethernet port switch as well as the wireless portion

Un-share and re-share the printer on the 98SE box. Then, delete it
and re-install it as a network printer (if it doesn't show up
automatically) on the XP box.
