Where do I need my filters?

Hi all, just ordered ADSL for the first time but not sure how many
microfilters I need to get.

Main telephone point downstairs with normal splitter, one goes to phone, one
to upstairs socket.

Upstairs socket has extension reel plugged in running to the computer (ie.
no phone upstairs) , modem lead plugs into extension reel.

So where do I need to put filters? Will I need to get three filters in
total? If someone could point me to a decent site/faq explaining I'd be
grateful (looked on adslguide.org.uk but not much help). It's having the old
splitter downstairs that confuses things!

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dan,
this depends a bit on your modem. Some modems come with standard BT
plugs and some don't. If your modem has a standard BT plug, then ensure
that there is no filter anywhere in the line going to the modem. If your
modem has the american style plug, then it will have to be plugged into a
filter, but note that this socket on the filter is not really filtering
anything, it is there as an adaptor only. No filter should be anywhere in
the line before the one the modem is connected to in this case.

All other equipment must go through a filter, including your existing
analogue modem, any sky digiboxes etc. So in your case, you need one filter
in the line for downstairs where it splits off at the master socket, and no
filter in the line going upstairs. Possibly one at the computer upstairs if
you still want to use your analogue modem (usefull on the few occasions that
ADSL goes down), or if your ADSL modem needs the adaptor part of the filter.
