Hi ,

I have 2x desktop WXP Pro and an external USB ADSL modem.

I need one desktop upstairs next to the ADSL phone point. and another PC
downstairs in the lounge. About 10 metres through 2 brick walls as the crow
flies.

I wish my machines to be able to do data to each other, gaming to each other
and independant connection to the NET, ie PC 1 is turned off, PC2 can access
the web and vice versa.

I believe I need an ADSL router with built in modem, (but these only seem to
be wireless) 1 x PCI ethernet card and 1 x wireless network card . I can go
wireless but its more expensive for the hardware, even though I would only
need to connect one via wirelss I think. The other can use an ethernet
connection as most routers of this sort seem to allow both.

Firstly is the above correct ?
Secondly Can you get a non wireless router with an ADSL modem built in ? If
not, why not, there must be a reason ! Or do I plug the modem into the back
of the router in some way (Its one of those flat green Speedtouch USB jobs
supplied by BT and has no ethernet connection ).
Thirdly can anyone suggest a better way ?

Many thanks.
Jon.

A Netgear DG814 is a ADSL modem & wired router. Add a network card for each
PC and the connecting cables. This setup will allow you to do exactly as
you stated.

Or you could try the Netgear DG834 ADSL Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall
(NW-016-NG)

Four products in one, this multitalented firewall router combines an
ADSL modem, router, four-port 10/100 LAN switch, and SPI True Firewall
to deliver broadband access that’s continuously available for sharing
with all your networked devices.

Ok - Thanks, but surely thats a DSL (cable) modem not an ADSL modem. I
believe they are different ?

Maybe the DG834 is the one to go for ?
