I am wanting to make a computer connect to the internet automatically when
XP boots up, is this possible? Its using a standard speedtouch modem
(supplied with the broadband supplier 'Virgin.Net' ).

Thanks
Robert

I think it will work if you put a shortcut for Internet Explorer or whatever
browser you use into your startup folder.

You could dump the usb modem and get an Ethernet modem or modem/router.

Not an option, its for a tight fisted old git, who thinks spending a quid
breaks the bank !

Stick a shortcut to the dial up connection in the startup folder.

I did that back when I had a Speedtouch and found that it was trying to
connect before the Speedtouch (or USB port) was properly initialised. Had
to change it back in the end.

They do have an advantage. My Mrs foolishly clicked on a link in an
email, and then when that installed some nasty chose to permanently
accept the firewall rule to let it make an outbound connection. It was
only when I started the computer the next day and I noticed the
connection icon launch I was able to trace what she had done. Hopefully
she's suitably trained now

Write a batch file that delays the start up of the file then.

Not quite sure how well this would work though as it depends how much
other stuff it loads on start up so the USB devices may be put down
the list, so timing the delay would be a guess at best.

Router.

Doesn't matter now, been on a router for a couple of years.
