I'm using a Linksys WPC55AG PC card in my laptop running Windows ME.
Linksys' WLAN Monitor is how I connect to various wireless networks. But I
can't seem to find a way to disconnect from a network other than shutting
down the laptop of ejecting the PC card. Am I missing something here, or is
there just no way to easily disconnect from wireless networks?

Goto Programs, then Connexionsn then right-click on the icon representing
your wireless connexion. Choose Desactivate.
Just double-click on the same icon to reactivate your connexion.

Change the channel setting in the wireless card... should be easy, or just
disable the card in software.

Ron, unless I'm mistunderstanding you, there is no way to do this on a
Windows 98 system. There is no icon I can find anywhere representing my
wireless connection other than Linksys' WLAN Monitor, and that doesn't
allow me to deactivate or diconnect a connecttion after it's been made.

My wireless connection is a LAN connection, not a dial-up connection, and
there doesn't seem to be any way to disconnect a LAN connection in Windows
98, except for using winipcfg. Using winipcfg, I can release the connection
that the PC card has to an access and then renew it. It just seemed strange
to me that there wasn't an easier way in windows or, especially, using the
software included with the PC wireless network card.

Oops!
You're quite right Mark.
I should've read a bit more carefully your message. Brain filtering I guess

In that case, I suggest to make a batch file with an associated shortcut on
your desktop.

The text in the batch file would be:
@echo off
winipcfg /switch

Put any appropriate parameters in the winipcfg line to disconnect (or
reconnect) your LAN connection, the same you would type manually. Should
work until someone come up with better solution.

Or change to a different SSID - you could have a bogus one set up called
Disconnect.

I tried making a bogus SSID called Disconnect with Linksys' WLAN Monitor,
but although it seems to disconnect for a moment when I press connect for
that SSID, if I'm around the access point that I have been connected to
(and want to stay disconnected from) my card keeps on reconnecting with the
default SSID. I could change the channel on that SSID or delete it, but
that seems a great deal of hassle.

I could also eject the card from my laptop, but that seems fairly
troublesome. There should be a way in software to easily disconnect from an
access point you have been using.

The only way I know of in a Windows 98 (actually ME) machine is it run
winipconfig.exe and "release" the wireless card.
