How do I configure a DSL modem over rs232 terminal?

Hi there,

I use SuSE 9.2 Pro on a very new AMD64 system, and am soon to get
a DSL internet connection active at my home. The DSL router I have
bought is an Open 501R, but it was purchased 2nd hand - I need to
reset the modem to default settings but the only way to do that is
using an rs232 straight thru cable and terminal...I already have a
straight thru cable...

That leads me to the next question - which software do I use to
open a vt100 terminal to the router over the rs232 cable I have?

No HOWTO I've found says how to do that; I guess thats because the
idea of turning a fast Athlon64 into a dumb terminal is somewhat
silly, but in this case necessary! :-)

Oh, and I need to setup the com port to 9600 baud 8N1 with flow
control off...how do I do that under linux?

Kind regards,

Chris Wilkinson, Brisbane, Australia.

Among other programs there is minicom. It may already be on your system.

Hi there,

My SuSE 9.2 Pro dvd didn't have minicom, but I found a copy on an FC3
dvd and used
that instead...it works but the next issue is to guess the root
password on the router
I'm trying to configure, since the previous owner (I don't know who
that is) changed the
default pwd! :-(

I might give up completely and buy a new DSL modem I think... :-)

Thanks guys,

Look around on the unit for a wee little hole -- that inserting a
thin plastic pin and pressing will cause a total default-to-factory
reset. Most too-smart-for-their-own-good electronics have that
"feature" now-a-days.
