Just ordered BB and have been told that BT now have to test the line.
What exactly do they do? Is it just a matter of how far you are from
the exchange or is there more to it than that? Does somebody actually
test the individual line?

It is (AFAIK) essentially line attenuation that matters - which equates to
distance mostly! BT's online number checker uses predictions and if that
says OK BT will normally proceed with an order with no actual checks. BT
can also, in marginal cases, do a manual check (from the exchange end) but
not all ISPs will get them to do this.
