Hi. I am very new to linux and i boot into it every now and again to have a
play around and see what i can get to work. My challenge at the moment is
to be able to browse the network that my computer is connected to and share
and receive files. So far i have not found a way to do such a thing. I
did find the program Kbear, is this what i use to search for files and what
not or am i missing something. Thanks for you help.

You need to install samba.
Mepis liveCDs have this pre-installed.
The download mirrors are here http://www.mepis.org/book/view/1462
Burn the iso image to a CD, reboot on CD, no need to install
anything, this linux works by directly running off the CD.

What kinds of computers? If you want to access Windows filesystems over
the network as in "Network Neighborhood" you need to use samba.

If you want to access filesystems on *nix type computers, you'll probably
want to use NFS.

Try the smbclient program. You can browse the net in the command line
with that. If you are using KDE and you have the LISa daemon running
you can then browse the network from konqueror. If you want to mount
filesystems you need the smbfs.o module loaded.

hi;

In KDE you can also type smb:/ in the location bar and not have LISa
running.
