DNS WINS Integration

It appears that WINS Integration on 2003 Server only works for queries to the
root of a the zone and does not if the query is for a subdomain.

For example, if I enable it for the "blue.com" zone, it will forward queries
to the specified WINS server for "alpha.blue.com", but it will not for
"bravo.lima.blue.com".

You would think that it would just take anything in the domain or
sub-domains, but this appears to not be the case.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dunno, but since WINS is for NetBIOS and doesn't actually know anything
about DNS domains, this doesn't sound surprising at all.

True, but the way this works is that DNS strips off the domain name, then
queries WINS with the unqualified name, NetBIOS doesn't know or care that the
NetBIOS name query is comming from a DNS server.

It looks like MS coded it so that it only does this for the top level DNS
domain in a given zone, if the name presented is for a sub-domain, it just
doesn't forward the query to WINS, this makes absolutely no sense, why limit
it to the top level domain.
