Hi

How do I configure a 2003 server to assign static IP
address and be the Primary DNS server? I only have one
client, simple network, I want that 2000 pro client to be
able to receive a new IP everytime it logs on to the 2003
server.
I have only installed 2003. Have not yet installed AD etc,
are there any other services i need to install?

Thanks
Mark

IP is not related to logon by default. The PC will pick up an IP address at
startup. The ensure that the client receives the same IP address everytime,
configure client reservations on your DHCP server. You can also use 006 in
your scopy options to ensure that DNS server address is supplied to the
client.

You need to install DNS to run active directory. Clients must be pointing
to that DNS server.

Thanks for your help.
I have installed DHCP on 2003, set ranges etc.
I dont have a DNS address for either machine though. Can i
still use DHCP for the 2000 client without DNS? Also i
didnt enter a router address in DHCP as only two computers
involved. I also have a TCP IP problem. I can ping the
server from itself, that works, but on client i cant ping
the ip address but the loop back address works.

When connecting the client 2000 to 2003, all i need is a
domain name (how can I set the 2003 to be the primary
domain controller, the main DNS server non reliant on any
other?) username for client and password and DHCP set on
2003 to assign IP address for client whenever logged on?
Are the points correct or am i missing something?

I currently have services enabled but a dead network. DNS
is for AD, can i still create a domain between a server
and one client before setting up AD and getting into that?

Thanks for your help
Mark

You will if you make the server a DC.

Yes. DHCP will hand out whatever you tell it to hand out. It is "dumb", it
just does what it is told.

If it is a closed system and not on the Internet then there is no "router".
If the Server is on the Internet and is to be providing the connection for
the Client, then the server is the "router".

Too many possible causes there. There is no way I can simply guess about
that.

Run DCPROMO from a command prompt to make the server a DC.

??? Don't understand the question. You can have a domain if all you had
was the server with no clients. A "domain" isn't dependent on how many
machines you have.
