You don't suppose that the IP is having a problem?
Anyway, the way things work normally is that the router provides LAN side
addresses for the PC's connected to it. The IP assigns a Wan address to the
Cable modem. The lan side of the cable modem usually has an address like
192.168.100.1 (Linksys modem) The router can be set to find a DNS server
automatically, or use specific servers called out by the IP. It sounds like
automatic DNS service is not working , and is likely either a router setup
problem, or an IP problem.
When things don't work, can you look at the modem log with IE using the
numeric lan side address for the modem? The log may show IP or connection
problems.
