Isn't there a way to see how resosulution is occuring. Sourt of a tracert for
dns.?

I want to view what servers are answering and reponding to resolving a
certain resquest.

I would like to see the interative steps

You can using a packet sniffer. There are many free ones out there, from
NetMon to Wireshark

Wireshark: Go deep.Network protocol analyzer for Windows and Unix that
allows examination of data from a live network, or from a capture file on
disk.

Type NSLOOKUP /? from a command prompt.
