DNS Resolution problem. HELP!

This is the same problem as my recent post titled "Win PC visible on
network, but can't use DSL modem", but I have it narrowed down a bit,
(with the help of the good people at Dlink):

I have been trying to get my wife's Win98 machine to access the
Internet. It is visible on the LAN, but can't get on the Internet. I
find that I can ping sites on the Internet by their numbers, such as
4.2.2.2 for yahoo and 66.102.9.104 for google, and get a response. If
I try to ping yahoo.com or google.com either I get an unknown host
message (yahoo.com) or an Illegal Operation message (google.com). Is
there some fix for this? Some cab I can reload? I would be so grateful
for any suggestions!
Thank You,
-plh

First, make sure your Dlink has the correct gateway and dns IP addresses.
Make sure you can ping those addresses from your Win98 pc.
Then use winipcfg (from cmd) on the win98 pc to check the local IP and make
sure you are:
a) set up to use DHCP
b) getting the correct gateway and dns IP from the DLink
Make sure your Dlink is responding to the DHCP request - check the Dlink.

It sounds like your win98 pc is not getting the correct address for the dns.

Thank you so much for responding
Other computers (3) on the network (peer-to-peer) are fine so I assume
it is OK.

Checks out

Yes.

Yes.

>Make sure your Dlink is responding to the DHCP request - check the Dlink.

Again, the other computers (one of which runs win98) have no problem.

True, but it seems to be a problem with the specific computer, not the
network or router. I am trying to find alternatives before I resort to
reloading the OS. So I am trying to find out what those alternatives
might be. But it seems that something is corrupt in the OS. I am
hoping to find a way to reload that corrupt part, if I can identify
it.
Thank you again for your response,
-plh
