Hey guys. When I do an nslookup on my DNS servers (primary and secondary) I
get the following 'Cant find server name for address x.x.x.x : server failed
Default server: unknown address: x.x.x.x '

The address it lists is the current DNS server i'm on. I just set up my
secondary DNS. Is it possible I did something wrong. Does it imply that it
also isnt' working anymore? Thanks.

Hi Mark,

What the message means is that your DNS server is unable to execute a
reverse lookup of the IP address x.x.x.x. A reverse lookup gives you a name
from an IP address. A forward lookup gives you an IP address when you input
a name. Not all IP addresses have forward DNS, so this is not always a
problem. However, DNS servers almost always have a reverse lookup name
(reverse lookup name is also called a PTR record, which is short for
"pointer" record). Therefore, you might have entered the IP address
incorrectly.

Can you resolve names through DNS? I always use the basic ping test to
make sure forward lookup is working. Note that if you make updates to
DNS its good practice to flush the local DNS cache and then re-register
DNS on the client. Many people assume they can simply make changes in
DNS and its an immediate refresh or something. I would say you maybe
entered the DNS settings incorrectly on your second server. After you
verify the settings assuming you are running DHCP I would run the
following commands

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Just to make sure you have all the new settings

Cheers - jon
