Can a DNS name be any name for the server, and just it
have to be regidtered with ICANN? The name is used for
internal use only

Thanks

You can use any name you would like. Such as big.local or big.com It
really doesn't matter for internal use. You could get screwed up if you use
the name big.com and that is your website name when you go to go out to that
website your local DNS might resolve it too it's self. I would keep it easy
with a *.local extension. You can make all sorts of entries in your dns if
you have to its very customizable.

Thanks
