Windows 2003 R2 Standard DC Server DNS Server
Windows XP Pro SP3 workstations

Was trying to ping a workstation from the server due to MBSA failed to
connect to the workstation and I got a outside ip address

My ip address range is 192.168.17.x subnet 255.255.255.0
server is 192.168.17.1 static

All workstations get ip address from DHCP server

when I ping I get 68.178.232.99 which is outside my network

I ran ipconfig /flushdns then ipconfig /registerdns
on server and workstations

but it still is happening

Any ideas or suggestions

Thanks

tom

Hello Thomas,

What do you mean with MBSA failed? Does the machine has more then one NIC?

Best regards

Meinolf

No none of my computers have more than one nic.

MBSA failed to connect to the computer to collect the information

I checked the firewall settings and I have ports 135 139 445 TCP listening

I have ports 137 and 138 UDP listening

I had to restart the server and the workstations to clear this up

I will try MBSA later again today

What can cause DNS to go wacky?

Thanks

Tom

It is now happening only on the server I restarted all the workstations
which seems to clear the cache
I did restart the server last night and it was working but now I must type
the ip address

I have wins also running on the Windows 2003 Server

This started after I ran MBSA last night for the first time it tries to
resolve names also just food for thoughts

When ip ping tgwk001 now from the server I get the 68.x.x.x address returned
again only from the server now

Thanks

Tom

Hello Thomas,

I assume that you check forward and revers lookup zones that the record is
not listed with that ip? Is on the router maybe a DHCP/DNS server running?

Best regards

Meinolf

Yes I checked the forward and reverse lookup zones and that foriegn ip
address is not listed anywhere.

My Windows 2003 Server does all the DHCP and DNS
also WINS

My router does not do any of those functions

If you need any further info let me know

Thanks for your help

Tom
