DNS errors on Win98/WinXP network

I have a network that consists of 3 WinXP systems and 3 Win98SE
systems.

I had ICS working with one XP system supporting a dial-up modem.
Everything was working fine.

I now got a cable modem, which I installed on another machine.
I got internet sharing working for most of it. The other XP systems
and two Win98SE computers works just great.

The last Win98SE computer can access the internet, but cannot access
the DNS server. So every entry creates a DNS error. The computer can
access just fine if you type in an IP address.

I checked every setting I could between the two Win98SE systems. As
far as I can tell they are identical. I have tried removing TCP/IP
from the failing systems and having Windows reinstall it. Still no
change.

Then, I figured that I would just jump in and insert a router into
mix. Hopefully to simplify.

I had an 8-port switch. I added a 4-port router (Netgear rt314) to the
switch with a crossover cable.

After tweaking and adjusting, I have all computers with the exception
of the one Win98SE computer. It can access all other computers in the
LAN. Others can access it.

I tried removing and reinstalling TCP/IP. No good.
I physically removed the network card, then reinstalled. No good.
I reinstalled Win98SE on top of the existing operating system.
I have used WINIPCFG to release and then renew the adapter settings.

I have compared the TCP/IP properties between the Win98SE computers
and can find no differences.

Ping 192.168.0.1 will work
Ping 216.157.23.254 will work
Ping www.digitize.com will not work, returns 'unknown host'

Internet explorer will not access either 216.157.23.254 or
www.digitize.com ('Internet Explorer could not open the search page').

I am getting close to simply wiping the hard drive and reinstalling
from scratch.

Any other suggestions?

TIA,
Joe

Although this article claims to be only for "dial-up" networking problems,
I've found it to be a valid article for any TCP/IP networking problems:

Thank you, Richard. The Winsock fix worked.
