On a peer-to-peer network (ie without a server running DNS) which uses a
router to access the internet, the router's DHCP server can be configured to
hand out to PCs one of two different addresses as DNS server:

- IP address of router

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-50-BF-xx-xx-xx
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.11
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.1 router
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.1 router

- IP address(es) of your ISP's DNS servers

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-50-BF-xx-xx-xx
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.11
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.1 router
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 212.159.11.150 ISP's DNS servers
212.159.13.150

Both seem to work equally well. But is it better practice to configure it
one way rather than the other? If so, which is the preferred configuration.

It's possible that the router caches DNS information in the first
configuration, which can save other PCs requesting the information from the
ISP's servers as would happen with the second configuration. Therefore, the
first configuration may give better performance.

That said, there is likely to be very little difference, so there's no
obvious best practice or preferred option.
