For those on Be's own DNS, their DNS service has changed today for all
users (static or dynamic) to 87.194.255.154

Details on how to change it (if not already that) is on the portal. The
latter includes the statement.

"This means that on 2nd February you may lose the ability to surf the
web. Crikey!"

Oh dear, we are ten years olds ;-(

Have you got an authoritative link for that?
I used to get 87.194.255.0 automatically and had problems with it, so
much so that I have been using Open DNS, but oddly that gives me
another problem in reaching smtp1.bethere.co.uk, the thing I have never
been able to comprehend is this problem persists even if I put the
IP of the smtp server (87.194.255.156) in my mail client.

The DNS you mentioned has been know about for some time
http://beusergroup.co.uk/technotes/index.php/DNS_Issues

My router does indeed now discover it automatically, so I have
switched away from OpenDNS for the time being. I will let you know how
I get on.

No real direct link without logging into the BE portal.
It's mentioned in the 'my account' section on the right, and I found
completely by accident last night. No email about it :-(

Yup, it's the one Be previously used just for static customers. I read
they are moving dynamic customers over to it from 87.194.255.155

I am getting the feeling that it's an issue with the Netgear DG834PN that
I am using.

BE only gives out a single DNS, .154 automatically ie. no backup server.
It's as if the stupid thing is looking in the empty location after so many hours,
and you can't put the same address in both.
So now I have manually assigned .154 and .155 and all seems stable.

What it doesn't explain is why I couldn't send mail direct to 87.194.255.156
(smtp1.bethere.co.uk) when OpenDNS was used for DNS
it makes no sense!

Meanwhile, at the uk.telecom.broadband Job Justification Hearings, Graham.
chose the tried and tested strategy of:

Is it a repeatable problem? Apparently OpenDNS cache stuff quite
aggressively; it's possible that OpenDNS couldn't reach Be's DNS when
somebody tried to resolve smtp1.bethere.co.uk, and were returning you the
this-name-doesn't-resolve IP address.

Thanks Nicola, but I don't think it's the same issue.
Besides, I flashed this 834PN with v1.03.39 some time ago.

Since I put the two DNS server addresses in manually this morning it's all
been fine.
